20th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March Story & Photos March 29, 2009
Over 5,000 marchers braved the sand and high winds for the 20th Annual Bataan Memorial Death March. There were 21 survivors answering roll call in the opening ceremony. The ceremony was concluded with two new F-22's just being put into service doing a fly over. The survivors gave the marchers a hand shake and well wishes to start their 26.2 mile or 15.2 mile march. Throughout the day, as long as the weather permitted, the survivors were at the finish line welcoming marchers back. Amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan were among the marchers on the march. Marchers in the military and civilian heavy divisions once again put on their 35+ pound packs filled with rice, beans, etc. which they donated to the Food Bank boxes at the finish line. The Bataan Memorial Death March is one memorial you will never forget.
