Celebrating its ninth year, the Peace Officers' Memorial 5K was run in memory of those who lost their lives in the line of duty. The race, which begins at Wesley Bolin Plaza is a moving event. The weather was warm--hinting at the summer just around the corner--but still nice for a run.

"NABI's "Chasing the Sun" event derived its name from a childhood memory that Hopi Vice Chairman Cedric Jywanunvay shared with NABI Managing Partner, GinaMarie Scarpa during a meeting of the Arizona Commission of Indian Affairs. Muwaninvaya invited the board to his Hope Village of Sipaulovi, also known as Second Mesa. Standing atop the mesa overlooking a peach orchard, Kuwaninvaya remenbered how, as a boy growing up in the village, his father would wake him up before dawn every morning to run down to the orchard and back before the sun came up. His father called it "Chasing the Sun", to encourage implementing exercise as part of a daily life style as well as, to promote health and wellness to our Native American communities. Thus, the idea of the "Chasing the Sun" 10K Race and Pow Wow was born. Look for a bigger and better race next year.
